Background:

Penrith Lakes Development Corporation (PLDC), part of the local Penrith community since 1980, required a stepped weir to control the entry of flood waters from the Nepean River to the Penrith Lakes Scheme. The weir forms part of the larger Penrith Lakes Scheme which also provides flood mitigation benefits for surrounding and downstream areas. The weir is located adjacent to the Nepean River at the base of the Blue Mountains, NSW.

Key Requirements and Scope:

J Steel was engaged to design and supply the main construction materials for the weir walls. PLDC required a cost effective, sustainable and long life alternative to the conventional weir design and construction proposed by other consultants. The J Steel design included the structural and geotechnical design of the steps, aprons and anchored abutments using a range of traditional and innovative construction materials.

Solutions and Benefits:

  • PLDC preferred the aesthetics of the flat panel vinyl sheet pile over the original gabion basket reference design.
  • The vinyl sheet pile solution allowed the project to be completed significantly below budget and ahead of schedule.
  • J Steel worked proactively with Ward Civil, Civil Sydney and PLDC in the difficult onsite geotechnical conditions to manage and solve any issues.
  • Up to 60m of vinyl sheet pile wall for the weir steps was installed per day. Ward Civil and Civil Sydney are to be congratulated for the efficiency achieved.
  • The sheet piles were manufactured from recycled materials providing increased sustainability benefits.
  • The weir design utilising the vinyl sheet piles provided better hydrological performance than the reference design.
  • Vinyl sheet piles are UV stabilised and supplied with 50 year product warranty to meet the 50 year design life.
