Auckland City Rail Link
BACKGROUND

The Auckland City Rail Link is the largest infrastructure project ever to be undertaken in New Zealand It is a 3.45km twin-tunnel cut and covers underground rail link up to 42 metres below the city centre, transforming the downtown Britomart Transport Centre into a two-way through-station that better connects the Auckland rail network. Connectus (McConnell Dowell and Downer JV) were chosen to construct the cut and cover tunnels under and along Albert St from Customs Street to Wyndham Street. Their in-house design required the tunnel to have heavy bracing along the length of the structure.

SCOPE

Fabrication, testing, coating (where required) and delivery to the site of approximately 1200t of hot rolled sections for bracing and formwork.

OUTCOMES

J Steel Australasia was awarded the supply of the bracing and formwork following the competitive tender process. J Steel could offer competitive pricing with relatively short delivery times due to being able to access a large volume of stock material. Hence avoiding any delays associated with waiting for mill rollings. This also provided greater flexibility with any unforeseen design changes or variations.
