Barangaroo is Sydney’s biggest urban regeneration project since the 2000 Olympics and one of the most significant waterfront transformations currently underway anywhere in the world. The site is divided into three distinct development areas – The Headland Park, Barangaroo Central and Barangaroo South. Lend Lease is developing Barangaroo South and has entered into an exclusive agreement with Crown Resorts to develop a landmark six-star hotel resort on the site, which will be branded Crown Sydney. Barangaroo is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a vibrant new precinct to live, work and visit. The overriding objective of the Crown Sydney Hotel Resort is to introduce a landmark waterfront building to Sydney that is timeless and iconic in nature. A world-class six-star hotel at Barangaroo will become an architectural icon and recognised globally. Crown Sydney will help the city of Sydney to capitalize on the growth in Asian tourism, particularly luxury-focused tourists from China. Crown Sydney has been designed to create a unique opportunity for tourists, local residents and workers to experience Barangaroo’s cultural amenities and public parklands. The design of the hotel resort will enhance the visitor experience by protecting the public domain and integrating world-class restaurants, cafes, bars, retail and leisure facilities and becoming a focal point for the western edge of the city for the enjoyment and usage of tourists and Sydneysiders alike.
Supply and fabrication of 37 no. hot-rolled, high-strength steel (HISTAR® by ArcelorMittal) plunge columns with a minimum yield of 460N/mm2 to allow for the top-down construction of a 3-level carpark basement.
The plunge column sizes ranged from HD400 x 187kg/m to HD400 x 1202kg/m and lengths from 14 to 24.5m. The heaviest column when fabricated was almost 30 tonnes. The total weight of the HISTAR columns was 356 tonnes.
- Integral bolted collar plates at basement slab interfaces
- Embedment plates
- Top plates with shear studs to tie into ground floor slab
- Lifting components
All fabrication completed locally in Sydney with full QA/QC documentation provided.
Crown Resorts required a 6 star Green Star rating for their new Hotel/Resort. The fully recycled HISTAR columns manufactured by ArcelorMittal in Luxembourg provided a significant advantage in this regard when compared to the original fabricated scheme using locally produced materials when undertaking a life cycle assessment and comparing their embodied carbon. The hot-rolled, high-strength HISTAR® column option provided the client with significant saving against the conventional columns fabricated from plates.
