HZ Combined Walls


Introduced by Arcelor in 1972, the HZ king pile is rolled with a 'bulb' at the end of the flanges on which a connector will be threaded.

Introduced by ArcelorMittal in 2008, the HZM king pile is milled post rolling to accommodate the connectors on a range of beams that provide increased capacity, design flexibility and efficiency.

The elements of a HZ/HZM combined wall system are the king piles, connectors, and AZ sheet piles installed as intermediate infill elements between the king piles which act as the primary structural supports. The HZ/HZM system can incorporate single beams, double beams, or continuous beams. The combination of different beam configurations with various AZ sheet pile infills offers a wide range of design alternatives. All combinations are based on the same principle: structural supports comprising one or more HZ/HZM king pile section(s) alternating with intermediate double AZ sheet pile sections.

Structurally, the HZ/HZM king pile solution fulfills two functions:

  • as retaining members, they resist horizontal loads resulting from earth and hydrostatic pressures
  • as bearing piles, they resist vertical superimposed loads

The intermediate sheet piles have only an earth-retaining and load transfer function and they may be shorter than the king piles.
